New Chieftain crowned at
the O'Leathlobhair Clan rally
The 14th annual O Leathlobhair Clan Rally took place at the
weekend and once again was an unqualified success.
Taking place over a three-day period the proceedings
commenced with an under-14 hurling game between Ballypickas and Carlow Town with
the local lads coming out on top. Then onto the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel for
refreshments and the presentation of medals to both teams by the outgoing
Cheiftan, Paddy Lalor of Portlaoise. The entertainment for the evening was
provided by a superb band Na Fianna singing Irish songs in a traditional manner.
On Saturday after the AGM, the clan went on a tour taking in Heywood Gardens, the old Raheen Cemetery and the grave of 'Honest' Pat Lalor. Then to the ledgendery Tenakill House. Finishing at Whelan's bar for refreshments.
Later that night it was the Clan Banquet and the election of this year's Clan Chieftain, the highlight of the rally. This year’s elected Chieftain is P.J. Lalor from Abbeyleix who hurled for many years with Ballypickas. He was piped in by a member of the James Fintan Lalor Pipe Band. The outgoing Cheiftan received a certificate for his services in his year of office. Entertainment was supplied by the Statesmen and various people from the floor including Stuart Lawlor from England who also sang on Friday night.
The weekend came to an end with an ecumenical service at which Fr John Lalor, PP Camross officiated.
